Career Advice for People With Criminal Backgrounds

Greetings Job Seekers,

Often time I receive questions about companies hiring people with felons. What to apply for? How to apply? Who is hiring? and so on. 

Here are a few tips to help you in your job search.

Tips #1
Do be persistent, but not rude. If you have a felony conviction it is not acceptable to boldly ask a recruiter if they hire felons via cold call nor face-to-face. Instead apply for the positions using the assigned method, avoid using a chronological resume instead submit a functional resume that highlights your skills that apply to that position, prepare to win the job with a dynamic interview presentation. Advertise yourself as a benefit to the company your previous history may not be a major factor.

Tip #2
If you find that looking for a job the regular way is not getting you fast results. We suggest you take your resume to the streets.
Follow these step to get maximum exposure:
  • Create an attract professional body billboard.
  • Pick a street corner with high traffic, get written permission from business or city that you plan to stand in front of.
  • Pick a time and date that will guarantee you are seen by news media (morning 8am-11am), (afternoon 12pm-3pm), (evening 3pm-6pm)
  • Sent a press release to all local and national radio, news stations and newspapers. Include: Why, Where, What and Who.
  • Create a Facebook page that is open to the public so that employers can contact you for a interview, post your resume on the page.
  • Be prepared to be interviewed by reporters and talk about your skills and talents. Dont forget to mention how recruiters can find you on Facebook.

Tip #3
Shopping is a natural habit I discovered the mystery of how to get paid to spend hours at the mall. I was the envy of all my shopping pals until they exposed my secret that I am getting paid hundreds to shop and dine in metro Detroit. Major retailers pay people to evaluate theaters, car dealerships, restaurants, casinos, banks and retail stores. The average mystery shoppers will earn $ 200-500 monthly working part time. 
This is a serious position that requires extensive training, excellent written communication skills, accurate evaluation and off camera acting. Just like Hollywood mystery shoppers receive ratings after every assignment a bad rating can affect your ability to get future jobs. 25 Mock Interview Questions

It is important to be prepared for your next interview. Often times job seekers are nervous or ill prepared for the questions that interviewers ask. It is a fact that all interviewers ask the same questions easy, simple or difficult. 


We suggest that candidates practice mock interviewing with several family members they can be your worst and best critics. Here are some interview questions to help you prepare:

  1. Tell me about a time that you didn't work well with a supervisor. What was the outcome and how would you have changed the outcome?
  2. Have you worked with someone you didn't like? If so, how did you handle it?
  3. How do you get along with older (younger) co-workers? 
  4. Tell me about a time that you worked conveying technical information to a nontechnical audience.
  5. Why do you think you will be successful at this job?
  6. Tell me about a time that you participated in a team, what was your role?
  7. Tell me about a time when you failed. 
  8. What would you do differently if you could start your working life over?
  9. How do you balance life and work?
  10. What is your preferred way to communication - instant message, phone, or email?
  11. What historical figure do you admire and why?
  12. What did you do during this six month gap in employment?
  13. What inspires you in a job?
  14. What excites you most about the position and what do you think would be stretch for you? 
  15. Start with your graduation from high school and explanation the rationale behind each of your career moves. Also explain the thinking process that went into making each if those decisions.
  16. How many hours a day/week do you need to work to get the job done? 
  17. Tell me about yourself.
  18. Why should we hire you?
  19. What do you know about our company?
  20. Why are you currently looking for a job?
  21. Have you been fired recently? If so, why?
  22. Can I call your current employer? What would they say about you?
  23. Do you have any questions for me?
  24. Do you have proper transportation? Are you tardy often? How many times have you called off work in the last 30 days? For what reasons?
  25. What can you offer me that other candidates cant? What make you the best indicate choice?
